



As part of its efforts to promote sustainable development and environmental protection in the state of Gedarif, the Sudanese Environment Conservation Society (SECS) launched the Eco Peace Project in 2011 with support from OXFAM the Netherlands (novib) and was implemented in partnership with SECS branch in Gedarif and local community based organisations.
The project targeted marginalized communities affected by environmental challenges and conflicts over natural resources.
Project Objectives
- Raise environmental awareness and promote a culture of environmental peace.
- Build the capacity of local communities in sustainable natural resource management.
- Improve livelihoods through eco-friendly, income-generating initiatives.
- Foster dialogue and cooperation between farmers and pastoralists.
Key Achievements
- Trained over 200 youth and community leaders on environmental peace and local governance.
- Planted 5,000 tree seedlings in deforested areas.
- Established Community Environmental Peace Committees in all target areas.
- Organized participatory workshops to build trust among neighboring communities.
- Supported 16 small-scale livelihood projects (poultry farming, beekeeping, community orchards).

- Direct beneficiaries: Approximately 1,200 people (60% women)
- Target communities: Um Rakuba, Khor Jamez, Bandagio, Um Dagineh
- Awareness campaign reach: Over 5,000 individuals
